ABW began as AbiWord's editable XML record

An .abw file is the native document format of AbiWord, the lightweight open-source word processor. It is XML rather than a picture of a page, so its text, paragraph formatting, lists, tables, page settings, and document metadata are stored as markup that AbiWord can revise. A normal ABW is not a ZIP package like DOCX or ODT: the historical AbiWord format documentation describes one XML file that can include styles, metadata, and inline images. Images may be stored as Base64 data, which is why an ABW containing pictures is not necessarily a small text-only file. A plain-text editor can reveal the XML, but it is a poor way to read or repair the document because it shows tags and encoded image data instead of the laid-out pages.

Related extensions are useful clues when an attachment will not open. AbiWord's command-line manual identifies .abw as its XML format, .zabw as gzip-compressed AbiWord XML, and .bzabw as the bzip2-compressed form. Renaming a compressed file to .abw does not decompress it, and renaming any file to .pdf does not convert it. Open the source in a compatible writer first. If AbiWord reports recovery errors or the document already has missing images and substitute fonts, a PDF conversion will faithfully capture those existing problems rather than restore the missing material.

ABW is most often encountered on a computer where AbiWord was chosen as a small alternative to a larger office suite, or in an older archive created with it. Its main difficulty is portability, not secrecy. AbiWord's own older help explains that Microsoft Word does not directly support AbiWord files; a document must be exported to a format Word can read. PDF is the useful choice when the recipient needs a dependable view or print copy, not a file for continuing the original word-processing work.


Making pages from an editable ABW document

The two formats do different jobs. AbiWord first reads the ABW's paragraphs, styles, page size, headers, images, and font requests, then lays them out. A PDF stores the resulting fixed-page description: text, fonts or font references, graphics, and placement instructions needed to display the same page. The PDF Association describes PDF as a complete description of a fixed-layout document. That makes a PDF broadly viewable in browser viewers and dedicated readers without AbiWord, but it also means that a paragraph is no longer an AbiWord paragraph with its original editing rules.

Nothing in this step can invent missing quality. If a raster picture inside ABW is 640 by 480 pixels, putting it on an A4 PDF page does not create more detail; enlarging it merely spreads the existing pixels over more print area. Likewise, a PDF can preserve searchable text when the exporter writes text as text, but it cannot recreate a font that was not available while the page was laid out. PDF export is therefore a rendering operation, not a repair operation or a safe replacement for the ABW master.

Keep both files. Make corrections, margin changes, image replacements, and wording changes in ABW, then produce a fresh PDF. Trying to make substantial late edits in a PDF changes a page-level result rather than the source document's flow. It can disturb line wrapping, page breaks, links, and reading order. The useful handoff is an ABW master beside a separately named PDF publication copy, with the latter checked before it is sent or printed.


What changes when the document becomes a PDF

  • The recipient no longer needs AbiWord: a PDF viewer reads page content, whereas an ABW needs software that understands AbiWord XML.
  • Pages stop reflowing as a word-processing document: this protects a reviewed layout, but it makes later editing much less natural than revising the ABW.
  • Font availability matters at export time: a substitute face can have wider or narrower glyphs, changing line breaks before the PDF is made.
  • Low-detail graphics remain low-detail: PDF can preserve the image it receives, but conversion cannot add pixels that the ABW never contained.
  • Embedded-script output needs a visual test: a 2023 Debian report against AbiWord 3.0.5 documented garbled Chinese lines in some PDF output under a particular locale, so non-Latin text deserves a page-by-page check.
  • The source stays valuable: ABW retains editable document structure; the PDF is the finished-view copy, not an equivalent editable archive.

These consequences are why a quick first-page glance is not enough. Review a dense text page, a page containing each non-Latin script used, a page with tables, and every image-heavy page. If a change is needed, adjust the source and export again rather than accepting a PDF merely because it opens.


Which programs can render the two sides of the conversion

AbiWord is the reliable reader for its own ABW files. Its manual exposes a conversion interface through --to=FORMAT and lists both pdf and docx among the format names; --to-name=DEST supplies a specific output path. On a system with the corresponding filters installed, a command such as abiword --to=pdf --to-name=final.pdf source.abw expresses the operation clearly. The exact filters packaged by a distribution can vary, so use abiword --help on the computer doing the work instead of assuming every build has the same export path.

PDF viewing is a separate matter. Modern browsers, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview, and many operating systems can show a normal PDF without knowing anything about ABW. Viewing does not imply editability, accessibility tagging, or identical print behavior, so open the exported file in at least one independent viewer as part of the check. If the PDF is meant for a print shop or a form system, inspect the exact copy supplied to that service rather than a thumbnail in a file manager.

Older AbiWord guidance recommended RTF for exchanging editable documents with Word users because Word can import RTF. That advice concerns editing exchange, not fixed delivery. Choose PDF when the important requirement is a finished page; choose a word-processing format when a recipient must revise text and return changes.


Export failures have identifiable causes

Lines wrap differently or a page gains one extra line. This starts before PDF writing: the renderer selected a different font, saw different font metrics, or used a different page setting. AbiWord's Unix font documentation notes that PostScript-oriented output depends on fonts in a format the PostScript representation can understand. Use a known available font, set the intended paper size and margins in ABW, then compare the source print layout and PDF at 100% zoom. Do not attempt to fix a cascading reflow by moving text boxes in the PDF.

Chinese, Arabic, accented, or other non-Latin text looks wrong. Do not assume this is a universal PDF limitation. The Debian 3.0.5 report is a documented example of locale-sensitive garbling, not proof that every current build fails. Check a small source containing the affected characters, make sure the chosen font contains those glyphs, and inspect copied text as well as its appearance. If a particular AbiWord build fails, use a maintained renderer that can open the source correctly, retaining the ABW until the output has been checked.

An image is absent or poor after export. First see whether it is already absent in the ABW view. The source may hold an unsupported object, an image that failed to import, or a low-resolution bitmap. Replace the image in the source with a suitable file, keep its proportions, and re-export. Increasing a PDF's quality setting cannot retrieve a graphic that the source application did not render.

Export ends with a crash or a temporary saved file. There are historical reports of PDF-save crashes in AbiWord 3.0-era packages. Preserve the ABW and any automatically created recovery copy before retrying. Then test a new one-paragraph ABW: if that works, the original document or one of its objects is implicated; if it fails too, the installed program or export component is the more likely fault.

Questions to settle before distributing an ABW PDF

Can Microsoft Word open the ABW if I skip conversion?
Microsoft Word does not natively support AbiWord's ABW format. Export to PDF for a fixed read-only-style copy, or use a compatible editable exchange format when edits are required.

Does a PDF preserve all formatting automatically?
It records what the export renderer successfully laid out. Missing fonts, unsupported objects, failed image imports, and locale-sensitive text output can still alter the result, so inspect the actual PDF.

Why did changing .zabw to .abw not make the file readable?
ZABW is gzip-compressed AbiWord XML. An extension rename changes only the name; it does not decompress the bytes. Open it with software that recognizes the format or decompress it correctly.

Should I delete the ABW once the PDF opens?
No. Keep it as the editable source. The PDF is the verified delivery copy, while the ABW is where wording, formatting, and future corrections belong.
