The ET Workbook Is a WPS Spreadsheet File

An .et file is a WPS Spreadsheet File, made by the Spreadsheets component of WPS Office from Kingsoft. WPS's own Save As guide names "WPS Spreadsheet File (*.et)" as a selectable file type, which is stronger evidence than treating ET as a misspelled Excel workbook. It is a spreadsheet document: cells can hold values and formulas, and a workbook can contain sheets, charts, formatting, print settings, names, and other objects that are not visible in one cell grid. The similarly named .ett extension is a WPS spreadsheet template, not an ordinary workbook. That difference matters when a file opens with a template-oriented workflow rather than as an editable copy of existing data. An ET file should first be identified by its producing application and full extension, not guessed from its icon alone.

ET is a native WPS format, not the legacy Microsoft Works Writer .wps format and not a renamed XLSX file. WPS Office includes Writer, Presentation, and Spreadsheets; each component has its own document types, so the program name alone is not a complete format description. WPS also documents opening and saving OpenDocument spreadsheet files with the .ods extension, showing that the application can work across formats without making them identical. The practical reason an ET file exists is that it was saved for continued work in WPS Spreadsheets. If the next editor uses a different suite, an exchange copy such as XLSX or ODS may be better, but the original ET should remain the master until the new copy has been checked.

What Changes When ET Is Exported Elsewhere

A workbook conversion is an object mapping, not a filename change. The exporter reads WPS cells, formulas, sheet order, formatting, chart definitions, print settings, and other saved properties, then writes structures understood by the target format. XLSX is an Office Open XML workbook package, while ODS is an OpenDocument spreadsheet; each has its own rules for workbook parts and application behavior. A simple sheet of values usually has less to translate than a workbook with named ranges, conditional formats, charts, pivot-like reports, external links, data validation, or macros. A target format can hold new formulas or styles added after export, but it cannot infer an object that was absent from the ET source. Conversely, an ET result made from another format may not retain every detail whose equivalent does not exist in WPS.

Formula appearance deserves a separate check from formula correctness. Two programs can display the same current result while handling a function, a date system, an external reference, or a calculation setting differently on the next recalculation. A chart can still look broadly correct while an axis label, font, data range, or print position changes. An export to CSV is a much larger reduction because CSV stores displayed text and values in one table, not multiple sheets or workbook objects. For a shareable editable copy, export through WPS's Save As path rather than changing .et to another extension. Open the result in the intended receiving program, calculate or refresh only on a test copy, and compare important totals with the original before using it as a replacement.

Six Real Tradeoffs in Choosing ET

  • Gain - native WPS editing: ET is the file type WPS lists as its own spreadsheet document, so it is a sensible working copy inside that application.
  • Gain - full workbook scope: unlike CSV, an ET workbook can carry more than one sheet and can hold formulas, formatting, charts, and print decisions.
  • Gain - a template partner: the separate ETT template format can create new ET workbooks without overwriting the original template file.
  • Loss - limited interchange by extension: many recipients recognize XLSX immediately but do not have an ET reader installed or selected as their default app.
  • Risk - feature translation: formulas, links, complex formatting, chart controls, and validations can need review after export to another suite.
  • Risk - false identity: renaming an ET file to XLSX does not create the target package and can trigger a repair warning or a refusal to open.

The strongest reason to keep an ET file is continuing work in WPS Spreadsheets, not the belief that it is universally easier to share. If recipients need Microsoft Excel compatibility, create a tested XLSX copy. If they only need a fixed reading copy, use a checked PDF, understanding that spreadsheet editing ends there. If the data is meant for a database or import system, its required format may be CSV, TSV, or another documented exchange structure instead. The choice should follow the next task. Keeping named copies such as budget-working.et and budget-delivery.xlsx makes it clear which file remains editable in the original environment.

Where an ET File Can Actually Be Opened

WPS Spreadsheets is the first application to use for an ET workbook. WPS Office is available on multiple desktop and mobile platforms, but platform availability is not proof that every version provides identical feature behavior. WPS's help center separates support areas for spreadsheet use and mobile file-opening problems, and its Android support recommends updating the app where versions earlier than 16.7 meet system compatibility restrictions. A file received through WhatsApp, Line, or Telegram can also fail to invoke WPS directly even when the file itself is sound; WPS recommends restarting, updating, moving the file to another local path, and choosing WPS from the file manager. This is a path or app-association problem, not evidence that an ET workbook has become an Excel file.

Microsoft Excel is not a reliable native ET viewer simply because it reads many Excel-format workbooks. The safer exchange route is to open the ET in WPS and use Save As to create an XLSX or another agreed target, then check that target in Excel or the recipient's spreadsheet application. WPS's official ODF help also confirms that it can open and save ODS, which can be useful when an OpenDocument workflow is required. Do not expect a web upload service, a preview pane, or an email client to understand every ET workbook feature. The final compatibility test is an open, save-a-copy, and visual review in the same program and version family that will receive the file.

Failures Reported When WPS Cannot Read a Workbook

WPS's own troubleshooting material lists several concrete reasons a spreadsheet may not open: a damaged file after a power outage, system crash, or virus event; an unsupported format; permissions that prevent reading; or an outdated application. Its suggested sequence is useful: update WPS Spreadsheets, check the file format, try another spreadsheet program, and use a repair path only after preserving the original. If the file cannot open in a second application either, corruption becomes more likely, but it is still wise to copy the file before any repair attempt. Do not repeatedly overwrite a questionable workbook while testing. A repair tool can change or remove damaged parts, so the untouched source is needed for comparison and later recovery.

Forum reports show a second class of problem: a specific WPS update can change how a particular spreadsheet opens, including prompts to repair files that opened in an earlier release. That does not prove the file is corrupt, but it does justify recording the WPS version and testing a copy in another version or application. If only files from a cloud-mounted folder freeze or fail, copy one test file to local storage before blaming the format. If the workbook opens but shows changed formulas, compare formula text and key results, not just the visible first sheet. The genuine fix should match the cause: update for an application defect, export for an unsupported recipient, change permissions for access failure, and restore or repair a copy for actual corruption.

Specific Questions About ET Spreadsheets

Is an ET file the same as an XLSX file?
No. ET is WPS's native spreadsheet file type; XLSX is an Office Open XML workbook. Exporting creates a new target file, while renaming only changes the extension label.

How should I open an ET workbook without WPS?
Ask for a tested XLSX or ODS export from WPS. Do not assume Excel can read an ET file directly, and do not rename the file to force an incorrect reader.

Why does WPS say a spreadsheet cannot be opened?
Check the extension, permissions, local file path, and WPS version first. WPS lists unsupported formats, corruption, permissions, and outdated software among real causes.

Can an ET export lose workbook features?
It can change features whose target equivalent behaves differently. Compare formulas, key totals, chart ranges, named items, print output, and validation rules after conversion.

Should I delete the ET after making an XLSX?
Keep it until the XLSX opens, recalculates as expected, and passes a page and formula review in the receiving application. It remains the best recovery point for WPS-native work.
