MP4 is MPEG-4 Part 14, a container that can carry video and one or more timed audio tracks. It is not synonymous with one codec, one language, or the sound a player happens to choose first. Test the actual receiving player, rather than using one desktop player as proof for every device.
MP3 encoding can also introduce encoder delay and end padding. These are separate from the MP4's edit-list choices. A result may have a first or last sample issue despite a correct extracted range. Gapless-aware metadata conventions can help compatible players, but players do not all behave identically. Check the opening consonant, the ending tail, and, for album-like material, a transition to an adjacent output in the intended software.
Do not apply a guessed trim to every file. First identify whether the mismatch arises in source track selection, MP4 edit interpretation, MP3 encoder delay, or destination playback. Keep a note of source track identity, desired start/end, encoder choice, VBR/CBR policy, and tested player. It turns a later fix into a controlled delivery revision instead of a destructive series of re-encodes.
ID3 Tags Are a Separate Metadata Decision From MP4 Metadata
MP4 metadata may exist at movie, track, media, or application-specific locations. MP3 commonly uses ID3 tags, a different tagging system. A title that was useful inside an editing project does not automatically become a correct listener-facing title; a track name can describe an alternate language, a temporary version, or a technical mix. Check title, artist/creator, album or series, track number, date, language, copyright, and artwork in the destination library. Artwork should be authorized and appropriate for the audio release; a frame from the source video is not automatically valid cover art.
