An ODP File Is the Presentation Member of the OpenDocument Family
A file ending in .odp is an OpenDocument Presentation. It is used by presentation applications such as LibreOffice Impress and Apache OpenOffice Impress, and Microsoft PowerPoint can open and save it too. ODP is not an image format and not a PowerPoint file with a different three-letter ending. It is the presentation type in the OASIS OpenDocument Format, an open office-document specification that covers text, spreadsheet, drawing, and presentation documents. An ODP deck can contain slides, text, pictures, shapes, media, notes, styles, and settings that an ODF-aware presentation program can read and edit.
The origin matters when choosing software. Microsoft says PowerPoint 2016 through Microsoft 365 can open and save OpenDocument Presentation files, and identifies Apache OpenOffice Impress and LibreOffice Impress as applications that use the format. That does not make every ODP slide a native PowerPoint slide. Microsoft explicitly warns that an ODP presentation can display with different formatting when opened in PowerPoint because ODF applications and PowerPoint support different features and formatting options. The useful expectation is therefore interoperability with feature limits, not a false promise that every program will reproduce every animated or themed slide exactly.
ODP Is a Single Package Containing Separate XML Parts and Related Binary Data
An ODP file is a package, not a flat sequence of rendered slides. The OASIS OpenDocument 1.3 package specification says an OpenDocument package stores XML content in separate parts together with associated binary data as entries in one package file. It also defines the package format, digital signing, and optional metadata. This separation lets the document hold its content, style information, settings, metadata, and picture or other binary resources without placing every kind of data in one text stream. The manifest identifies the package entries, which is why a genuine ODP file has a meaningful internal structure beyond its filename.
PPTX is also a package-based office document, but its XML vocabulary and application behavior are Office Open XML rather than OpenDocument. Moving between ODP and PPTX therefore means mapping one presentation model to another. Simple text, pictures, basic shapes, and ordinary lists have close representations. Items with no direct equivalent are where conversion changes occur: PowerPoint says ODP does not support color animations, scaling animations, animation sounds, ActiveX controls, macros, comments, encryption, protection, columns, or themes in the same way. A converter can preserve visible content while turning a special effect into a simpler object or discarding unsupported behavior.
What OpenDocument Presentation Improves and the Features It Can Cost You

LibreOffice, OpenOffice, and PowerPoint Do Not Promise the Same ODP Result
LibreOffice Impress and Apache OpenOffice Impress are named by Microsoft as applications that use ODP, so they are the obvious starting point for an ODP deck. PowerPoint also gives a documented open route: File, Open, optionally choose OpenDocument Presentation in the file-type list, select the file, and open it. PowerPoint gives an equally explicit save route: first save a PowerPoint copy as PPTX if that copy must be retained, then Save As and select OpenDocument Presentation. Microsoft emphasizes this order because saving only in ODP can leave no separate PowerPoint version to return to.
Compatibility should be checked in the exact editor that will be used next. PowerPoint marks animations such as delays, timing, text animation, triggered animation, and media animation as supported, but marks entrance/exit effects and transitions as only partly supported. It specifically lists Blinds, Cut, Strips, Comb, and Newsflash transitions as unsupported. A deck with a critical chart animation can see that animation converted to one affecting the whole chart rather than individual chart parts. That is much more actionable than saying a file "may look different": run the slideshow, identify the named effect, and use a supported alternative or simplify that slide.
Specific ODP Conversion Failures and the Facts That Explain Them
A common problem is a presentation whose new shapes stop following its old colors, fonts, or effects after a PowerPoint-to-ODP round trip. Microsoft says ODP saving loses theme information and places it onto masters and layouts; the default theme is used on reopening, and future edits are made as if that default theme had been applied. The existing slides may appear acceptable, yet a newly inserted box can no longer inherit the original theme behavior. The fix is to preserve a PPTX master before the ODP save, then check master and layout slides after conversion and manually define needed styles for new content. Do not use ODP as the only editable master if PowerPoint theme inheritance is part of the required result.
Another visible failure happens with text and graphics. Microsoft says headers and footers become text boxes in ODP, 270-degree and stacked text rotations are not supported, objects inside text boxes are dropped when an OpenDocument file is opened, and gradient fills with more than two stops lose all stops after the first two. Those are distinct causes, not one general "formatting issue." Replace a multi-stop gradient with a two-stop gradient or a rasterized background if exact appearance is required; keep complex objects out of text boxes; and redesign unsupported vertical text before the save. For hyperlinks, regular links work but hover hyperlinks are not supported, so test the actual click target after opening the converted deck.
Media and charts need a separate review. Microsoft marks embedded WAV files as supported, but says movie or sound trim and bookmark behavior is only partly supported. It also marks charts as partly supported and states that chart-part animation is turned into an animation of the whole chart. Do not assume a deck's soundtrack or a carefully timed data reveal will behave correctly because the file opens. Test the ODP in slideshow mode at the actual presentation pace, then replace a fragile chart animation with a simpler whole-chart reveal or a sequence of static slides where exact timing matters.
ODP also has a real preservation advantage that should not be confused with a guarantee of visual sameness. The standardized package keeps document content and associated data in declared entries, rather than locking the deck into one vendor's undocumented binary stream. But interoperability depends on how each editor maps that specification. An ODP file can be structurally valid while a PowerPoint-only feature is downgraded according to Microsoft's compatibility table. Validation therefore has two stages: confirm the file opens in the required ODF editor, then confirm the particular slides with animation, theme, media, charts, and complex text still do the required work.
