DOC is the binary Word format used by the Word 97 through 2003 generation

A file ending in .doc commonly means the Microsoft Word binary format used by Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, and Word 2003. Microsoft’s [MS-DOC] specification calls it a collection of records and structures for text, tables, fields, pictures, embedded XML markup, and other document content. It is not the XML package used by DOCX. The binary format begins with a master record called the File Information Block, which contains references that let an application locate text and other objects. That record-based design is why a real legacy DOC cannot be made by renaming a DOCX, PDF, RTF, or random binary file.

DOC appears in archives, old templates, long-running records, and systems built around the Word 97-2003 compatibility generation. Current desktop Word can still open it, but the file opens in Compatibility Mode because newer Word features must be limited to remain editable in earlier software. Microsoft says Word for the web can view a .doc but prompts conversion to make a DOCX copy for browser editing. The practical reason to retain DOC is a genuine old-system requirement. For current editing, DOCX is normally the stronger master because it supports modern Office features without the 97-2003 ceiling.


The File Information Block points into a binary network of document records

Microsoft’s DOC specification says the File Information Block is the master record from which an application follows links to locate document data and compute object properties. In contrast, a DOCX uses XML parts and explicit package relationships. Both can represent paragraphs, tables, fields, pictures, and other familiar document material, but the internal repair and compatibility story is different. A DOC reader needs to understand the binary records and their offsets. A damaged pointer or record can affect how later content is found. Changing the filename extension changes none of that binary structure.

The format can contain substantial document content, so “DOC is only plain text” is inaccurate. Its limit is not that it cannot hold text styling or pictures; it is that it was designed for a much earlier Word feature set. When a current Word document is saved down to DOC, the converter must find legacy representations or reduce features. Microsoft’s compatibility documentation treats those reductions as potentially permanent. Keep an original DOCX or current-format copy before saving down, because reopening a DOC later in a modern Word release does not recreate information that had to be flattened, converted, or discarded for the old binary target.


The useful compatibility gain and the documented feature losses of DOC

Compatibility Mode is a protective restriction, not a warning that the document has failed. Microsoft says it temporarily disables newer or enhanced features so people using earlier Word versions can still edit the file and layout is preserved. The cost is that a DOC working file prevents use of modern features and can permanently remove data during save-down. Use the Compatibility Checker before making the delivery copy, and do continuing work in a current DOCX master. This separates the required legacy handoff from the richer document where later edits are made.


Word desktop and Word for the web do not offer the same legacy-DOC workflow

Microsoft’s current guidance says that Word for the web opens a file saved in .doc for viewing only. To edit in the browser, Word Online prompts for conversion and makes a .docx copy. Desktop Word is therefore the relevant environment for opening, testing, and saving a required binary DOC. Current Word releases show Compatibility Mode for a document created by an earlier version, and Microsoft describes the Convert command as the route to the newer format when old-editor compatibility is no longer needed. Do not assume a user who can view the DOC in a browser can edit the original DOC there.

The delivery test should match the actual oldest program that matters. Open the copied DOC in that environment, inspect page layout, tables, headers, footnotes, pictures, and fields, and run the Compatibility Checker in modern Word before sharing. If the recipient can accept DOCX, use the newer target instead. If the only requirement is that the document be read with fixed appearance, export an approved PDF alongside the DOC; it provides a stable visual reference when an old editor changes fonts or rendering behavior.

A conversion to DOCX creates a new document rather than changing the original binary bytes in place. Microsoft advises that converting to a newer format can make later editing difficult for people on earlier Word versions, which is why the decision belongs to the delivery requirement. Save the converted document under a distinct name, open both copies, and verify that the current-format version has the expected tables, footnotes, pictures, fields, and page count before treating it as the new master.


Failures with a known legacy cause: converted controls, charts, numbering, and repair limits

If a modern drop-down or protected region becomes ordinary text after DOC conversion, that is a documented 97-2003 consequence. Microsoft says content controls convert to plain text, their properties are permanently lost, and formerly enforced regions can become editable. Keep the DOCX master when those controls are meaningful; a later DOCX conversion cannot restore the lost control definition. Rebuild the old-format list deliberately or use a different delivery strategy if the numbering convention is part of the record.

If a chart or diagram becomes an uneditable image, it may have no editable legacy representation. Microsoft says some charts and diagrams convert to pictures, and data beyond the old 256-column by 65,536-row ceiling is lost. Check whether later editing of the chart is required before accepting this fallback. For WordArt, Microsoft says effects are removed and WordArt becomes static text; for tables, alternative text is permanently removed. These are accessibility and editing changes, not just design differences. Keep the original rich version and review the delivery file with the actual compatibility need in mind.

If a legacy file will not open, make a copy before recovery. Microsoft’s damaged-document guidance applies to current Word versions and emphasizes recovering content separately from preserving formatting. Use Word’s repair or text-recovery paths only on a copy, and understand that text recovery can lose layout and objects. Do not declare a file repaired merely because a renamed extension opens. The binary structure, File Information Block references, and document records must still be interpreted correctly by an actual DOC reader.
