"Any" Is Not One Source Spreadsheet Format
The word "any" on a converter page is an invitation to choose a supported source, not a technical format. XLSX, XLS, ODS, CSV, Numbers, and proprietary workbook files carry very different structures. An XLSX source can hold worksheets, formulas, styles, charts, validations, names, and relationships. CSV is only a delimited text table and has no sheets, formulas, chart objects, or cell formatting to import. An ODS document uses OpenDocument rules, while a legacy binary workbook may have older feature limits. The conversion to ET can be accurate only after the real source extension and its contents are identified. A truthful workflow begins by asking what produced the file and what the ET copy must still do in WPS Spreadsheets.
ET is WPS's native spreadsheet file type. WPS's Save As guide explicitly lists "WPS Spreadsheet File (*.et)," and its ODF support page says WPS can open and save ODS spreadsheet documents. That tells us the application can translate between formats, not that every source object has a perfect ET counterpart. A source consisting only of values and straightforward formulas needs less interpretation than a workbook with data connections, linked workbooks, macros, advanced charts, or custom add-in features. Do not invent a promise that every arbitrary document can be made into a healthy ET workbook. First establish that the source is a supported spreadsheet and then preserve a copy of it while the ET result is tested.
What a Valid ET Conversion Actually Writes
Creating ET is not changing a suffix after the final dot. A valid conversion reads the source workbook or table, builds worksheets and cells in WPS's model, writes the ET file structure, and saves it as a new file. The target can contain formulas, formats, multiple sheets, and other WPS workbook objects when those concepts are supplied by the source and supported by the converter. A CSV source is different: its fields become cells only after a parser decides the delimiter, encoding, text qualifier, and column types. The target may then be an ET workbook, but it cannot gain the source's missing charts or formula expressions because a CSV never stored them. Conversely, a source workbook may lose or alter an advanced object if WPS does not reproduce it in exactly the same way.
The simple extension test is valuable. An ET result should open in WPS Spreadsheets as a normal spreadsheet, allow a harmless edit, and save a test copy without a repair prompt. A file renamed from .xlsx to .et might carry the wrong internal structure under a WPS-looking name; the reverse problem occurs if an ET file is renamed to XLSX. If a program reports a mismatched format or offers to repair the file immediately, stop and return to the actual export process. Keep the original source untouched until the target has passed its checks. An honest conversion produces an ET file; it does not merely make another program attempt to guess one.

The target purpose should decide whether ET is appropriate. It is a good choice for local WPS editing, a poor choice for an unknown recipient who may only have Excel, and not a substitute for a public data format when automated importing is required. If the input is a database export, preserve its exact raw file and its data dictionary even after creating an ET convenience copy. If the input is a multi-sheet workbook, compare every sheet rather than assuming the first visible tab proves success. A useful handoff records the source name, source format, conversion tool, WPS version if relevant, target purpose, and the checks performed. That short record provides more value than calling every conversion "successful."
Compatibility Depends on the Source and the Reader
WPS Spreadsheets is the named program to open an ET result. WPS can also open and save ODS files according to its official help, and it offers ET in the desktop Save As list. That does not give Microsoft Excel, a web preview, a database importer, or an email attachment viewer a native ET reader. The recommended route for an Excel recipient is a second, tested XLSX export from WPS rather than expecting the recipient to install an application just to open one file. For mobile use, WPS recommends updating the app, and its Android guidance flags versions earlier than 16.7 as subject to particular system compatibility restrictions. Check the final target on the same device or platform the recipient will use when the workbook contains important formatting or formulas.
Text-source compatibility has its own trap. Microsoft explains that opening a CSV directly uses default format settings, while a controlled text import gives choices for delimiter and column format. Use that kind of controlled import before creating ET when fields include 00127, date-like text, non-ASCII names, or values with commas. A workbook import of correct fields is more important than an ET extension at the end. When an input is not actually a spreadsheet, such as an image, a PDF page, or a word-processing document, conversion may extract a table or make a best effort, but it is not a reliable route to a fully editable source workbook. Verify the source category before asking it to become ET.
Conversion Failures With Specific Causes and Fixes
If the new ET file will not open in WPS, separate a bad conversion from an environment problem. WPS lists unsupported format, corruption after a crash or virus event, permissions, and outdated software as actual reasons a spreadsheet may not open. First copy the file, check its extension and size, move a mobile attachment to local storage if it came through a messaging app, and update WPS before trying again. WPS specifically suggests opening a troublesome spreadsheet in another application to see whether the data can be recovered; if neither application can open it, corruption is more likely. Avoid overwriting the only source while attempting repair. The appropriate fix is an export from a known-good source, not a renamed broken file.
If the ET opens but looks different, identify the object that changed. Compare formula text and key outputs, then inspect sheet names, hidden rows or columns, named ranges, validation drop-downs, conditional formats, chart series, and print preview. If data came from CSV, compare the last record, row count, and identifiers that may have lost leading zeroes. If an ET workbook behaves differently only after a WPS update, test a copied file in a second version or another system and record the version number with the report. Real forum threads include cases where some spreadsheets opened in one WPS release but failed after an update, so version-specific testing is meaningful evidence. Rebuild only the affected object in the target after the difference is understood.

Questions Before Turning a File Into ET
Can every file be converted into an ET spreadsheet?
No. "Any" means a supported source type, and quality depends on what the source actually contains. A table in an image or PDF is not equivalent to a native workbook.
Will a CSV become a full ET workbook with formulas and charts?
It can become an ET workbook containing imported cells, but CSV has no original formulas, chart objects, styles, or extra sheets to recover. Those can only be added afterward.
Why does the ET result show wrong dates or missing zeroes?
