ISO BMFF allows unknown boxes to be skipped and private extensions through uuid, making it flexible across delivery and editing workflows. That flexibility makes receiver testing more important. A target may accept a generic MP4 shell yet reject its sample configuration or ignore optional metadata.
Sample Entries and Decoder Records Identify Actual MP4 Tracks
Each MP4 track has time-ordered samples and a description that tells a reader how to decode them. A video sample entry identifies the coding format; AVC commonly needs configuration associated with its sample description. An AAC track carries an MPEG-4 audio sample entry and decoder configuration. The delivery report should list actual sample entries, profile, level, dimensions, rate, sample rate and channel layout rather than only saying “converted to MP4.”
The choice may be stream copy where the source essence and target rules are genuinely compatible, or a new encode where they are not.
