An M4B file is normally an ISO Base Media File Format/MPEG-4 audiobook container, rather than the name of one fixed audio codec. A FLAC file has a different job: it holds a losslessly compressed representation of decoded PCM audio together with FLAC metadata. Therefore this conversion is not a simple extension change. Choose M4B to FLAC when an editor, library server, hi-fi player, or archive workflow accepts FLAC but not M4B. An AAC M4B Cannot Regain Detail When It Becomes a Lossless FLAC
The most important preflight question is what codec is inside the M4B. AAC is lossy: encoding discarded information to reduce size. Decoding AAC to PCM and losslessly encoding that PCM as FLAC preserves the decoded AAC signal exactly, but it cannot restore frequencies or detail removed by the earlier AAC encode. In that common case, the resulting FLAC is not an upgrade in sound quality and can be considerably larger. It is useful only when the target requires FLAC, when subsequent editing should avoid another lossy encode, or when consistent library handling matters more than storage.
An M4B carrying ALAC is different. ALAC is lossless, so a correct decoder can recover the original PCM samples; encoding those samples into FLAC can remain lossless. The bytes and metadata will not be identical, because ALAC and FLAC use different coding and container structures, but the recovered audio samples can match. This distinction is why a file extension alone cannot tell you whether M4B-to-FLAC preserves original audio fidelity.
M4B Chapters, Cover Art, and Audiobook Tags Need Separate Attention
M4B chapter navigation is timed structure in the MPEG-4 container. FLAC has metadata blocks such as Vorbis comments, picture blocks, seek tables, cuesheets, and application blocks, but a general FLAC player does not automatically treat those as the same kind of audiobook chapter system. A conversion can preserve ordinary descriptive fields such as title, album, artist/author, genre, date, comment, and embedded cover image when its metadata mapper supports them. It should not promise that chapter titles, chapter timings, bookmarking, series fields, narrator credits, or book grouping will appear identically in every FLAC player.
Before converting an important book, record its chapter list and cover externally. Afterward, inspect the FLAC in the destination application: confirm the book is not sorted into separate music-album views, the image displays at a sensible size, and your important author/title fields survived. If resume position and chapter jumping are essential, retain the original M4B as the listening master even if you create FLAC for another workflow.
DRM Authorization Is a Boundary This M4B to FLAC Converter Does Not Cross
Some purchased audiobook files are encrypted or authorization-controlled. A file can use an M4B-like or related MPEG-4 packaging while still requiring the account, application, key material, or device authorization supplied by its seller. Those are separate checks. If an M4B contains an AAC stream at 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz, retaining that rate in the FLAC avoids an unnecessary sample-rate conversion. Will M4B to FLAC improve audiobook sound quality?
Not when the M4B contains AAC. FLAC can preserve the AAC decoder's output without introducing another lossy encode, but it cannot recreate information AAC discarded. An ALAC-in-M4B source can remain lossless through decode and FLAC encoding.
Will FLAC keep my M4B chapters?
Do not rely on it. Some tools may transfer related cues or text, but FLAC players vary widely and do not universally implement M4B-style chapter navigation. Keep the M4B if chapters and resume behavior matter.
