An M4A file can contain audio in ISO base media structures, and AAC is commonly carried using an mp4a sound sample description. Apple documents that the MPEG-4 audio description’s elementary-stream configuration identifies an AudioObjectType; for example AAC LC is represented by a different value from CELP. The output sample entry and configuration must agree with the encoded packets, sample rate, channel configuration, and actual decoder path.
Copy a source audio stream only when its codec/configuration and resulting M4A carriage are accepted by the named receiver. Edit Lists and AAC Encoder Delay Control the Audible Start and End
In QuickTime and related MPEG-4 files, AAC is carried in a sound track as media samples. Encoder delay or audio priming can mean that the first stored sample is not the first sample that should be presented. Apple describes using track structures explicitly: an edit list’s media time can identify the first sample to present after encoder delay. A raw duration value therefore is not enough to judge audible alignment.
When extracting or transcoding, preserve or rebuild the intended audible timeline. Test first non-silent sound, a dialogue or beat near the start, a middle point, any requested trim boundary, and final audio. If there is a leading click, missing onset, late sound, or unexpected tail, inspect source edits, encoder delay, output priming representation, resampling, and sample duration rather than changing only metadata.
For audio-only output, a video edit cannot be blindly retained as a sound edit. Use decoded timing and the requested listening result as the authority.
M4A Metadata Should Be Deliberate After Video-Specific Fields Are Removed
M4V metadata may occur at movie, track, or media scope. A meaningful audio copy can retain a known title, performer, album, date, genre, language, rights statement, or artwork when its provenance and target interpretation are understood. Video dimensions, frame rate, visual chapter imagery, vendor fields, locations, and unknown data are not automatically meaningful in an M4A.
