Why converting M4V to MP4 can be more than changing the suffix

M4V and MP4 are closely related file families, but an extension does not prove that every application will treat them the same. This shared ancestry is helpful, but it is not a guarantee that stream-copying is possible or that every M4V feature should be retained. Think in terms of the audiovisual presentation the recipient needs: a picture, a selected soundtrack, accurate start and end, correct aspect ratio, and a documented MP4-compatible codec combination.

Set a bitrate and resolution budget instead of guessing at quality
