Choose the MKV audio track before creating M4A

These details explain why stream selection is a real technical decision. Tracks can have different codecs, languages, channels, default flags, and delay relationships. A default flag may suit the original muxer’s playback intention but not your target listener. Listen briefly to each candidate and note whether it is a full mix, commentary, or descriptive track. Set AAC or ALAC from the target rather than habit
Choose AAC M4A when the requirement is a compact audio file for ordinary playback, sharing, or a library that documents AAC support. Bitrate, sample rate, channels, and source complexity affect its quality and size. Higher bitrate does not restore detail already discarded by the source, but an unnecessarily low setting can introduce another audible loss. Test speech, music, transient sounds, and silence rather than judging by a displayed bitrate alone.
Choose ALAC M4A only when a lossless M4A and its likely larger size fit the target. It is not identical to FLAC: both are lossless approaches, but they use different codec and metadata ecosystems. A device may accept one and not the other. If the source audio is already lossy, either lossless target merely preserves the decoded result from that point forward; it cannot reverse the first encoding.
