The MPG Extension Does Not Turn Tracker Notes Into Footage

A .mod music file is a tracker composition. It appeared on Amiga systems through Ultimate Soundtracker and then NoiseTracker and ProTracker, and remains common in game, demo, and module-music archives. It stores small samples and instructions for playing them. A ProTracker-style layout can contain 31 sample headers, 128 pattern-order entries, patterns, and the underlying signed sample bytes. It contains no video frames, even when a conversion menu places MOD beside movie formats.

The extension .mpg is commonly associated with video/mpeg, alongside .mpeg, but it does not state one exact version, video codec, audio codec, resolution, or profile. MPEG is a family. A receiver might expect an MPEG-1 system stream, an MPEG-2 program stream, or a stricter profile associated with an older player or authoring workflow. Renaming a tracker file to .mpg changes neither its payload nor its compatibility.

To create a truthful MPG movie, render the MOD into audio using a selected tracker player and add an explicit visual source. A title card, still artwork, visualizer, animation, or real video can supply frames. State which was used. The new MPG is a presentation of a particular music render plus those visuals; it cannot reveal a hidden picture sequence from the module.


Pattern flow determines the audio length that the video must follow.

An order list chooses patterns in playback order. Patterns normally hold 64 rows, and a row can trigger a sample at a period/pitch, set volume, or use effects. Pattern breaks, position jumps, loops, delays, arpeggios, pitch slides, and tempo changes are not decorative metadata: they can change what plays and when. Traditional tracker operation often starts at speed 6 and tempo 125, with each tick lasting 2.5 divided by tempo seconds, but a module can alter that behavior during the song.

Choose a loop policy first: natural stop, one pass, a stated number of cycles, or fixed duration with a labeled fade. Make the visual track exactly match. A long looping module needs a conscious end decision; a still image still needs a timed video frame sequence once it is used in a movie. Do not let an automatic timeout become an undocumented musical edit.

OpenMPT warns that MOD has no stored playback settings, requiring a player to infer quirks when loading it. ProTracker-compatible four-channel behavior and later PC variants can differ. Record the engine/version, compatibility setting, output rate, pan choices, gain, visual source, dimensions, frame rate, and ending rule. These choices explain why two legitimate MPG files made from the same MOD may not sound or run identically.


An MPG Usually Holds Multiplexed MPEG Audio and Video Streams

MPEG-1, ISO/IEC 11172, covers moving pictures, associated audio, and a Systems layer that combines synchronized streams. MPEG-2 Systems describes packetized elementary streams, or PES packets. An elementary video stream includes compressed frames and information such as sequence and group-of-pictures headers. PES packets have headers with stream IDs: audio uses a form beginning 110, while video uses one beginning 1110. The multiplexer places the separate streams together with the timing information a decoder needs.

MPEG-2 offers program streams and transport streams. Program streams are designed for relatively error-free local storage; their PES packets are organized into packs. The Library of Congress description of MPEG-2 Program Stream notes that its pack header begins with a 32-bit start code. The stream layout is therefore an organized audio-video delivery structure, not merely a pair of compressed files placed side by side.

A conversion to MPG must name its actual target profile. The extension does not guarantee that any MPEG player will accept the selected video, audio, or system flavor. The tracker’s editable patterns, sample loop data, finetune settings, and order list are not part of the new elementary streams after rendering.


What an MPG Version Can Deliver and What It Cannot Restore

  • It provides a movie-shaped output: a receiving system can get synchronised audio with a supplied visual track.
  • It records one renderer's performance: tracker timing and effects are fixed as ordinary audio samples.
  • It can meet legacy needs: an exact MPEG profile may be needed by an old player or disc-oriented workflow.
  • It may introduce compression loss: codecs for the chosen MPEG profile can reduce visual or audio detail.
  • It cannot preserve source editing: no MPG decoder can recreate a MOD’s pattern grid from the soundtrack.

Use a modest, receiver-approved setting rather than assuming high resolution or a modern codec is safer. Upsampling old MOD samples or scaling a tiny image produces a bigger signal, not more original detail. If the destination needs only music, retain a rendered audio file instead; choose MPG because a specified workflow needs a video system stream.


A Receiver’s MPEG Rules Matter More Than .mpg Spelling

Different applications attach different expectations to the extension. One may accept MPEG-1 video with MPEG audio, another expects MPEG-2 program stream behavior, and another only claims support after a particular authoring preset has been applied. Find out the required video codec, picture size, frame rate, audio codec, bitrate, maximum duration, and any storage limitation. A file can be correctly multiplexed yet fail because the receiver cannot decode its chosen audio or video elementary stream.

Verify separately that the module has been rendered as intended. Listen to pattern transitions and effect passages in the tracker engine before making a long video. Then test the completed file in the actual target system, including seeking if the workflow needs it.

Keep sources even after a successful delivery. The MOD remains the editable composition, the still or video remains the visual asset, and documented settings make a second version for a different MPEG receiver practical without a lossy transcode chain.


Check Whether the Problem Is Music Timing, Visual Timing, or MPEG Compatibility

A sound-only file or black result usually lacks a valid visual stream. Add an intentional still, animation, visualizer, or video, make its duration agree with the finished audio, and confirm both audio and video streams exist in the output. No command in MOD can make pictures appear, so changing sample quality or tracker effect settings will not solve a missing visual layer.

If duration is wrong, return to the tracker render. Inspect order jumps, tempo commands, pattern breaks, and loop handling. A module that was designed to repeat can make a video job run endlessly unless its end policy is explicit. If pitch, effects, or loops do not match a reference, compare player quirks and resampling mode. Correct the audio first, because MPG will faithfully package the timing it receives.

If the target refuses the completed MPG, identify its required MPEG standard, codecs, resolution, rate, and system-stream type. Do not assume that changing .mpeg to .mpg resolves an incompatible program stream. Build a small test using documented requirements, test on the target, then make the full export from preserved sources.
