GIF89a Uses Indexed Pixels, Color Tables, and LZW Image Data
GIF89a begins with a logical screen and can include a Global Color Table; individual images may instead use Local Color Tables. Pixel values are palette indexes, not unrestricted RGB values. A color table has at most 256 entries, so a photographic MOV frame with thousands or millions of colors must be quantized. That is the central visual trade-off in MOV-to-GIF conversion.
Each image's table-based pixel data is compressed with GIF's variable-length LZW coding. Compression reduces repeated indexed patterns but does not remove the palette limit. Flat graphics and deliberate limited-color artwork often fare better than noisy video, gradients, smoke, or fast camera motion. Dithering can make a gradient look smoother by distributing palette error, but it can also create shimmering patterns and increase file size across animation frames.

Frame Delay, Transparency, and Disposal Affect the Animation Result
GIF89a's Graphic Control Extension applies to the graphic that follows it. It can carry delay time in hundredths of a second, a transparency flag and color index, and a disposal method. Delay is not a movie timebase: different browsers and apps may clamp or schedule short delays differently, so preview timing in the actual receiver rather than assuming a requested cadence is exact everywhere.
Transparency in GIF is one palette index, not full alpha transparency. Semi-transparent edges from MOV graphics need flattening or a deliberate matte choice, otherwise they can show halos against an unexpected page color. Disposal tells a viewer how to treat the preceding graphic before the next one; choices such as leaving it, restoring a background, or restoring a previous state affect partial-frame optimizations and can cause trails when encoded incorrectly.
For a simple full-frame animation, replace-style frames are often easier to validate. If using delta frames for size, test the first loop and repeated loops in more than one relevant viewer, because a disposal error can be hidden on the first pass and obvious on the second.
Size Reduction Must Not Hide Timing or Palette Decisions
The most effective GIF reductions are usually deliberate: shorten the clip, reduce dimensions, choose fewer frames, simplify the scene, and use a controlled palette. Reducing output cadence changes motion; reducing dimensions changes legibility; lowering colors changes tonal detail. State the goal—reaction loop, interface preview, product detail, or illustration—before choosing settings.
Do not create a tiny file by silently deleting the action that makes the clip meaningful. Watch for posterized skies, banding, noisy dithering, unreadable text, dropped transitions, and an awkward loop seam. If the source contains rapid motion or fine photographic detail, a modern video format may produce a smaller and more faithful result than GIF.
Keep the MOV and the export settings. GIF cannot be expanded back into original movie frames, original color precision, audio, or track metadata. A later new crop or different page background should return to the MOV visual source.
