ODP-to-PPTX Builds a Current PowerPoint Copy From an OpenDocument Package
An ODP file is an OpenDocument Presentation, while PPTX is the current Office Open XML presentation format. Both are package-based office documents, but their internal XML models and feature rules are different. The OASIS OpenDocument 1.3 package specification defines a package containing separate XML content and associated binary data entries; PPTX is PowerPoint's own current XML-based presentation format. A real conversion has to interpret the ODP slides and construct a new PPTX package. Renaming deck.odp to deck.pptx leaves the OpenDocument bytes unchanged and does not create a PowerPoint file.
PPTX is the appropriate target when the next editor uses current PowerPoint and needs an editable deck. Microsoft says PowerPoint 2016, 2019, 2021, 2024, and Microsoft 365 can open and save ODP files, but warns that an ODP presentation may not have the same formatting as the original application because of feature differences. The source can be opened in PowerPoint, then saved as a PowerPoint presentation, or converted with a capable service and checked in PowerPoint. Keep the ODP original because conversion creates a distinct working copy and special ODF behavior may be reduced in the process.
The Package Changes, but More Important, So Do Themes, Effects, and Object Rules
The basic conversion path is straightforward: read ODF package entries for slide content, styles, settings, metadata, pictures, and other data; then write PowerPoint slide objects and relationships in a PPTX package. Text, ordinary shapes, pictures, notes, lists, and basic text formatting have strong common ground. Microsoft marks them supported in its ODP table. This is why a simple slide deck usually becomes a useful editable PPTX rather than a bitmap-only reconstruction. The difficult work begins with the objects whose source behavior depends on ODF or whose PowerPoint counterpart has different properties.
Microsoft's documented limits make those differences concrete. Theme information in an ODP presentation is lost and placed on masters/layouts; when reopened, a default theme is used and later new shapes no longer inherit the former theme's fonts, colors, or effects. Headers and footers become text boxes. Chart-part animations become a whole-chart animation, unsupported entrance/exit effects become Appear or Disappear, and a gradient with more than two stops loses everything after its first two stops. The PPTX can remain editable, but its editable objects may no longer have the same source rules. Inspect both existing slides and a newly inserted shape after conversion.

PowerPoint, LibreOffice Impress, and Apache OpenOffice Have Different Roles Here
LibreOffice Impress and Apache OpenOffice Impress are the presentation applications Microsoft names as using ODP. They are useful for opening the source as its creator expected. PowerPoint is the destination check: Microsoft documents File, Open, then OpenDocument Presentation to open an ODP deck, and it says presentations can be saved through Save As with OpenDocument Presentation selected when taking the opposite direction. For ODP-to-PPTX, open the resulting PPTX in the current PowerPoint version that will receive it. A converter result that looks correct in another program is not evidence that PowerPoint has mapped every effect as expected.
Microsoft's table is especially valuable for deciding what to test. Animation timing, delays, text animation, triggered animation, and media animation are marked supported, while animation sounds are not. Regular hyperlinks are supported, but hover hyperlinks are not. Date and time fields can become a default type; distributed alignment, 270-degree rotation, and stacked text have documented limits. That creates a short test plan: play every animated slide, click links, inspect date/time placeholders, compare text alignment, and check rotated labels. The named check is faster and more dependable than scanning a fifty-slide deck with no idea where conversion risk lies.
How to Fix a Converted PPTX With a Flat Chart, Wrong Gradient, or Missing Text Object
A chart that now moves all at once rather than by a data series is a documented conversion result, not an unexplained PowerPoint defect. Microsoft says chart-part animations in ODP convert to an animation on the whole chart. Recreate the effect with multiple charts or multiple slides if staged data reveal matters, or accept the full-chart animation if it does not. For a multi-stop gradient, Microsoft says only the first two stops remain; replace it with a two-stop gradient or use a prepared image background. These targeted changes keep the slide editable where possible instead of replacing every item with a screenshot.
If a text box appears to be missing content, inspect whether an object was placed inside it. Microsoft says objects inside text boxes are dropped when an OpenDocument file is opened. Move the object out of the text box in the source and reconvert, or add it back as a normal PowerPoint object. Treat headers and footers as text boxes after conversion and check their positions manually. If a new PPTX object uses an unexpected color or font, repair the master/theme before editing the rest of the deck because PowerPoint says the ODP theme data is lost to masters/layouts and later edits use a default theme.
Media and text controls should be tested separately. Microsoft says embedded WAV files are supported, but movie and sound trim/bookmark behavior is only partly supported, and transition sounds are unsupported. It also marks date and time fields partly supported because another ODF application or PowerPoint can convert them to a default type. Play the media slides, inspect dates, and check text that uses distributed alignment, columns, or 270-degree rotation, because those text options have published limits. A converted file that shows every word can still be unsuitable if a schedule date changes format or a rotated label becomes unreadable.
Keep the source ODP until the PPTX has passed both edit and presentation review. Use the source or an accepted PPTX master for future changes rather than adding different changes to each format version. This is especially important after master-theme repair: a late source edit may need another conversion before its PowerPoint copy is current. A compact review checklist - first slide, complex gradient, animated chart, text-box object, links, dates, media, and a newly inserted shape - catches the documented risk areas without wasting time on random rewrites.
