The two very different histories behind a PPT-to-ODP request

A .ppt file is the binary presentation format Microsoft used for PowerPoint 97 through PowerPoint 2003. Microsoft’s MS-PPT specification describes it as records and structures for slides, text, shapes, pictures, audio, video, and other presentation material. An .odp file is an OpenDocument Presentation: part of the OASIS OpenDocument standard, designed as an XML-based, application-independent and platform-independent document format. LibreOffice Impress uses ODP as its native presentation format and its documented converter can turn Microsoft PowerPoint .ppt files into .odp documents. The usual reason for conversion is not that PPT cannot be opened at all; it is that editing and saving a deck in an ODP-focused program works best when the ongoing working file is ODP. This is a change of file model, not a cosmetic change to the extension.

PPT files commonly arrive from old Office installations, archival folders, and systems that retained the 97-2003 format. ODP appears in LibreOffice, Apache OpenOffice, and other applications that support OpenDocument. The OASIS specification says the standard covers authoring, editing, viewing, exchange, and archiving for presentations as well as other office documents. That broader standardization goal is useful when a document must not be tied to one vendor’s binary format. It does not mean every presentation application exposes the same features. The useful question is whether the final recipient needs an open, editable ODP or needs an exact PowerPoint rendering.


How a binary PowerPoint deck becomes an OpenDocument package

The source and target store presentation information in fundamentally different ways. PPT uses PowerPoint binary records. An OpenDocument package is a collection of files, normally including XML parts such as content.xml and styles.xml, and an ODP package carries the MIME type application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.presentation in its required mimetype file. The OASIS schema also requires an ODP presentation document to contain an office:body with an office:presentation child. A converter must read the old record-based slide data and write equivalent presentation objects, text, styles, timing, and media references into this package layout. Renaming .ppt to .odp cannot create those XML files or the required MIME declaration, so it produces an invalid file rather than a conversion.

Text, images, ordinary shapes, and basic lists have close equivalents, but the two models do not share every behavior. An item can remain visible while losing its original PowerPoint-only editing rule. Converting to ODP also cannot recreate source information that was flattened before conversion, such as text already converted to a bitmap in an older PPT. Likewise, a low-resolution image embedded in the original remains low resolution; a new package cannot invent pixels. The correct expectation is usable presentation content, not a guarantee that every application-specific effect will become an identical native feature. Review the exported deck in the program where it will be edited and in the program where it will be presented.


What becomes easier, and what may no longer match, after the format switch

  • Native LibreOffice editing: ODP is the native presentation format for Impress, so later saves do not repeatedly target the older PPT binary model.
  • Open package structure: OpenDocument is XML-based and platform-independent by specification, instead of a single PowerPoint 97-2003 binary stream.
  • Editable basic content: text, pictures, common shapes, and basic formatting have representations in both formats, but verify each converted slide.
  • Animation substitutions: Microsoft documents that unsupported ODF animations can change to Appear or Disappear, rather than retaining their original effect.
  • Theme behavior changes: PowerPoint reports that theme information can be lost into masters and layouts when saved as ODP, changing how future shapes inherit fonts, colors, and effects.
  • No macro carryover: Microsoft lists macros and programmability as unsupported in ODP, so a macro-dependent deck needs a different delivery plan.

The conversion is strongest for a conventional deck that needs ongoing editing in an ODP program. It is riskier for a presentation whose meaning depends on a click sequence, an ActiveX control, a branded PowerPoint theme, or a macro. Save an untouched PPT copy before making edits in ODP. Then check a sample of text-heavy, chart-heavy, animated, and media-heavy slides rather than looking only at the title slide. That targeted review catches the parts where a format mapping is least exact.


Where ODP opens well and where PowerPoint differs from an ODF editor

LibreOffice documentation names ODP as the format used by Impress and provides a Document Converter option for Microsoft PowerPoint .ppt to OpenDocument .odp. Microsoft PowerPoint can also open and save ODP files; Microsoft specifically names Apache OpenOffice Impress and LibreOffice Impress as presentation applications using ODP. That is useful for exchange, but Microsoft warns that an ODP opened in PowerPoint may not have the same formatting as it had in the application that created it because the applications support different features. Therefore, a deck intended for LibreOffice should be checked in LibreOffice, while one intended for PowerPoint should also be checked in PowerPoint. File recognition and identical layout are separate questions.

PowerPoint’s ODP support table gives concrete boundaries. Basic bold, italic, underline, and strikethrough are supported, while many advanced text fills, outlines, and effects are only partly supported. ActiveX controls are not supported; regular hyperlinks work, but on-hover hyperlinks do not. Headers and footers can become text boxes, and comments are not supported. For graphics, charts, masters, tables, and transitions, support is often partial rather than absent, which is why the result needs a visual check. Those details are more useful than the broad claim that the two formats are "compatible."


Known conversion symptoms and the technical reason behind each one

A frequent complaint is that a chart or animation still exists after saving but no longer behaves the same way. Microsoft says animations on chart parts are converted to an animation on the whole chart in ODP. It also says animations ODF cannot support are changed to Appear or Disappear, while color animations and several effects including Grow & Shrink are not supported. The fix is to simplify the important sequence before conversion: use whole-object animation where that communicates the same point, then play the ODP slide show from the beginning. Do not assume that an animation icon means the original timing and granularity survived. If the animated sequence is essential, distribute a tested video or PDF version in addition to the editable deck.

Another report is a change in theme, layout, or text wrapping after opening ODP in PowerPoint. Microsoft says theme information is lost and placed onto masters and layouts, so later new shapes use the default theme rather than inheriting the original theme’s fonts, colors, and effects. Headers and footers becoming text boxes, partly supported tables, and page-size settings that are saved but shown inaccurately in PowerPoint’s Page Setup dialog can also alter editing behavior. The fix is to inspect masters, replace unavailable fonts with an installed choice, and verify the final screen aspect ratio in Slide Show view. A third issue is a missing macro or interactive control: those are listed as unsupported in ODP, so redesign that interaction with ordinary links or keep a PowerPoint-format version for the interactive use.
